My First Miracle

While this blog is about my business, my photography and projects – it’s also about me and my life. I am a happily married mother of five boys. Yes, you read that right… FIVE BOYS. And yes, according to all who know me, it is quite ironic. I am a self-proclaimed girly-girl who loves to dance, lusts after shoes, purses and clothing and is more likely to have a different color polish on my fingers and toes every time you see me. I don’t really like camping, dirt or sports (much to my hubby’s chagrin – he played sports all through high school and college), and am known to take my flat iron and makeup on the one campout a year that I am willing to attend (family reunion) despite the funny looks it garners.

While it would have been nice to have at least one girl, I wouldn’t change the fact that I have my boys for all the money in the world. Why? Because… I wasn’t supposed to be able to have children of my own due to serious female health issues as a child. But how? You ask… Meet my first miracle:

This is Mr. D. He’s my oldest son, and he’s a miracle twice over. Once – by even being conceived. Twice – by clearing the way for his siblings. That’s right, he cleared the way, according to my doctors. Because of my unexpected, and unplanned pregnancy with D. all scar tissue was broken up. Not really something you hear all that often… but true, nonetheless. Aside from those reasons, D. is special in other ways. He sees the world differently than most of us do. His diagnosis of Aspergers did nothing to change our feelings for him, aside from making it easier to understand his lack of fear, impulse control and filters.

Yes, he rarely meets our eyes… has a shorter fuse than his brothers… is content to turn the music up and zone out… and doesn’t always understand why tact should be used. But, he’s brilliant with music – has a quirky sense of humor – loves toting around his baby brother – and is growing to be a tall (over 5’9″ already), strong and downright amazing young man. Happy 14th Birthday, D!
