Yarn Works – Current Projects – What am I working on?

It’s a question I’ve been fielding a lot lately. “What else are you working on?” I actually hear it all the time. Because while people love to see photos, they can’t necessarily buy them or afford them at that time. But when it comes to jewelry and/or crochet… there’s usually something they can afford.

At this exact moment (aside from editing sessions) I am working on a few crochet projects. I do have to get some finished projects photographed and posted so anyone who would like to can purchase them. But right this minute I’m working on a shawl.  My “Right Now” project currently looks like this:

I know, I know… what the heck is that? You ask. That is pieces… that will eventually be put together to form what’s in my head. I hope it comes out the way I am envisioning it… otherwise I’ll just have a lot of scrap yarn. 😀 What is it supposed to eventually look like? Well…

Like a lot of people out there I am addicted to Pinterest. I love clicking through there and finding new ideas. While a lot of the time I can find a specific pattern for a crochet project, sometimes I’m just out of luck. I crochet. I know some people who can both crochet and knit, but I am unfortunately not one of them. I’ll admit this flaw… I just can’t get my brain wrapped around knitting. It’s pretty and there are some gorgeous patterns that I seriously wish I could do. But no matter how hard I try, I just can’t get my hands to work the right way when it comes to knitting. So, I tend to save those pins for inspiration. Below are two inspiration pins of mine… the first one (the scarf) is actually a crochet pin. While I might one day make a scarf like this, I really was interested in the weaving part of it.

The second pin is what caught my interest.

entrelac shawl

I love the look of this, but as previously stated… I can’t knit to save my life and this is a knitting technique known as “entrelac”. While gorgeous, the closest I can find to it in crochet is the Tunisian Crochet version of it that I just don’t like as much. It just doesn’t have the same feel to it. Soooo… I am making my own version… or sort of version floating in my head. It won’t be exactly like this either, and that’s fine with me. I’ll post the finished product so you can judge for yourself if I hit the mark of “gorgeous” or “purty” or not… 😉

Matthew and Evelyn – Engaged!

This last week I had to opportunity to do an engagement session with a wonderful couple! I’ve known Matthew through church and his family since he was in high school, and to say that I was excited when they contacted me to take their photos is putting it mildly! I adore this family, and am so excited to contribute to Matthew and Evelyn’s special day!

Evelyn met Matthew when his mother hired her to work in their office. Little did she know she was hiring her son’s future wife! These two are so sweet, and so obviously in love, I had a seriously hard time picking just a couple images for their engagement sneak peek. It was hard, but here’s your Sneak Peek of your engagement session Matt and Evelyn! I can’t wait to help you celebrate the beginning of your life together! Enjoy!

My First Miracle

While this blog is about my business, my photography and projects – it’s also about me and my life. I am a happily married mother of five boys. Yes, you read that right… FIVE BOYS. And yes, according to all who know me, it is quite ironic. I am a self-proclaimed girly-girl who loves to dance, lusts after shoes, purses and clothing and is more likely to have a different color polish on my fingers and toes every time you see me. I don’t really like camping, dirt or sports (much to my hubby’s chagrin – he played sports all through high school and college), and am known to take my flat iron and makeup on the one campout a year that I am willing to attend (family reunion) despite the funny looks it garners.

While it would have been nice to have at least one girl, I wouldn’t change the fact that I have my boys for all the money in the world. Why? Because… I wasn’t supposed to be able to have children of my own due to serious female health issues as a child. But how? You ask… Meet my first miracle:

SONY DSC

This is Mr. D. He’s my oldest son, and he’s a miracle twice over. Once – by even being conceived. Twice – by clearing the way for his siblings. That’s right, he cleared the way, according to my doctors. Because of my unexpected, and unplanned pregnancy with D. all scar tissue was broken up. Not really something you hear all that often… but true, nonetheless. Aside from those reasons, D. is special in other ways. He sees the world differently than most of us do. His diagnosis of Aspergers did nothing to change our feelings for him, aside from making it easier to understand his lack of fear, impulse control and filters.

Yes, he rarely meets our eyes… has a shorter fuse than his brothers… is content to turn the music up and zone out… and doesn’t always understand why tact should be used. But, he’s brilliant with music – has a quirky sense of humor – loves toting around his baby brother – and is growing to be a tall (over 5’9″ already), strong and downright amazing young man. Happy 14th Birthday, D!

Monday Mishaps – Tripped Up

Once again, I bring before you… some mishap that has befallen me. Because if you can’t laugh at yourself, what CAN you laugh at?

My family is very fond of telling me that aside from dancing on a stage, I’m just not all that graceful. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not ALWAYS clumsy, and I HAVE been told by others that I do have a “graceful way about” me… but there are times my family wonders how I ever managed to twirl and spin across a stage when I can’t walk across a room some days without tripping over my own feet. I have always maintained that dancers are taught their entire lives to never look down: “You look like you don’t know the step (or- where you’re going – etc.)! Look up!” So, we don’t look down very often… therefore, we trip much easier! That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it!

Never before has this become more apparent than as I start to do more and more things behind the camera… instead of in front of it.

Case in point – the photo below:

SONY DSC

This blurry picture is of my younger sister and her hubby in the middle of a family shoot in January in Utah. We were all being silly, because that’s just my family, and the snow decided that it needed to get my attention. No really, that’s what happened. Anyone who truly knows me, and even some random strangers, know that I am not really fond of snow. In fact, it has become a goal in life for my father-in-law to get me to do a Snow Angel and to get it on film. Twelve years with my hubby and it has yet to happen.

During this shoot, I was standing in a cleared area of about shin high snow, taking the photos of my and my sister’s families. I took a step, thinking I’d cleared that area of snow enough to do so… oh, how wrong I was! I stepped down right into a spot that had NOT been cleared, and found I couldn’t move my foot and hang on to my camera at the same time. Needless to say, I’m not throwing my camera… so down I went! I proceeded to need help up, because I still wouldn’t put my camera down (really, would you?), and needed a bit of help extricating myself. I’ve been assured by my family and hubby that they’re so proud of me! I managed to keep taking pictures as I fell into the snow drift. All in all… the only thing hurt was my pride. 😀

Monday Mishaps – The Butt Dial…

SONY DSC

Okay, so I figure you can’t get through life without a little humor. And since I don’t like to make fun of someone … unless they’re thinking it’s funny too… I figured I’d put myself out there for the laughter and to remind us all… don’t take yourself so seriously!

Every Monday (hopefully) I’ll put up a post about some mishap I may have had over the last week… or one that I remembered from before that. Hopefully, they’ll give you the laugh (after the fact) that they gave me… Or they’ll serve as a “Gee, I probably shouldn’t do that” reminder! So, here goes:

Have you ever thought, “Oh, I’ll just tuck my phone back here in this pocket! It’ll be out of the way, and I’ll feel it if it vibrates.”? Come on, you know you have! I think anyone with a cell phone has. You tuck that phone away, because you don’t have the hands for it, or you just need a handy place to put it while your hands are busy elsewhere… I’m here to say that may not always be your best choice. 😀

This past weekend I was in the middle of an engagement session when it happened. Normally, I’d turn my phone off, but my hubby was working, and I needed my phone available for my kids. There I was… sitting on the side of a hill… and I shifted just enough to activate my phone. Hilarity ensued, but I wasn’t aware of it until much much later. I knew my phone had pressed a few buttons, but I thought I’d caught it quick enough before it dialed. Nope. I had butt-dialed my cousin and his wife later told me that they got garbled sounds… then what sounded to them like, “SHUT YOUR FACE!” Since I’d never say that to a photography client… unless it was my sister… I know that’s not what I said, but I can’t for the life of me remember what exactly I DID say! This isn’t the first time something like this has happened to our family:

My husband once hip-dialed me from work. I could hear him in the background and thought he had put me on a sort of hold while dealing with a customer. Nope, the phone was in his pocket and he WAS in fact talking to a customer (he was a store manager of a major paint company at that time). I wasn’t sure of this one my end, however, and proceeded to say loudly, “HELLOOOOO! CAN YOU HEAR ME?!” At this point, all my husband hears is a voice coming from below his belt… and with his sense of humor it became even funnier because he looked suitably horrified that his crotch was talking to him…

Needless to say, he knew the customers who thought it was funny, and I’m glad I didn’t butt-dial a brand new client of mine. Although, family may never let me live it down… I think from now on, I’ll tuck my phone into my camera bag, if I need it at all. 😀

My guilty pleasure? I LOVE WEDDINGS!!!!

L&J 053_edited-1-cloudywedding-somecolors_edited-1

I love weddings! No, really, I’m serious as a heart attack! I tell my darling hubby all the time that I want to renew our vows every year… because I love weddings. I guess it’s a good thing I’m doing photography of weddings so I can slake that thirst for all the big and little and tiny wedding details without having to spend all the money and energy on doing it again for myself.

Usually, I have a camera on hand… the above photo is from my own little sister’s destination wedding! I couldn’t help myself! The only reason I don’t have pictures of the ceremony of my other married sister? I was in the bridal party… somehow my big ole camera just doesn’t seem to go with a bridesmaid dress. No matter how much I accessorize it!

More often than not, I have to stop myself from getting involved beyond what I’ve been asked to do… I really love helping with flowers… favors… decorations… I especially love when I’m contacted by a bride to make her wedding jewelry for her… so if I’m not behind the camera, I’m usually helping in some other way. I love to see the look on the bride’s face when she sees all the little things just come together (okay and the groom too, but let’s face it, they’re not always as detail oriented as the brides… sometimes, but not always…). I love the joy when they dance for the first time as husband and wife. I love the laughter as they run from the venue to leave for their new life together. I love everything about them! I’d totally be a wedding crasher if I had the time!

So here’s my guiltiest little secret of all… ready? Okay… here goes… :::whispering::: I love weddings so much I’ve been known to haunt wedding boards on Pinterest, and wedding planning blogs. Luckily, I can get away with it more now, because I do, in fact, use the excuse of research for photo ops and ideas… But honestly? I did this long before I ever started doing photos at weddings… and I’m sure I’ll do it long after I stop taking photos (if I ever do!). So, now you know one of my guilty pleasures… what’s one of yours?

Yup… that’s me…

scouting location

While not the most flattering picture of me… I’ve got to love the fact that my hubby doesn’t care. To him, this is me doing what I love! While I’m usually much more put together than this, some days I’m better off with more durable clothing for wading through nature (even if it’s nature where least expected). Last night was no exception as I wandered through Lake Las Vegas finding new spots for sessions.

I think of all my endeavors, the photography tickles my family the most as I’m an incredibly girly girl who isn’t too fond of dirt, getting dirty, or hiking of any kind… give me a dance studio any day and I’m ecstatic. But my sensibilities don’t really matter when it comes to this. Hopefully, that means great moments on film. 😀

What do you do that may be outside what would be considered “normal” for you?

New Day… New Home!

Image

Welcome to the new home of CMe Boutique’s blog! After much consideration and gnashing of teeth, I have come to the conclusion that it’s time for a change of scenery.

No, we’re not moving to a different house, city or state… just a new blog site. After fighting with so many changes at the previous blog home, I finally bit the bullet and made the move to WordPress. Hopefully, this means I won’t have to fight so much for every single post. 😀

If you’re finding this blog by accident… Hey! Nice to meet ya! I’m Chris and this is my blog home where I’ll post my latest projects… photo sessions… life “stuff”… and whatever catches my fancy.

If you came here on purpose…. WELCOME! I’m so glad you dropped in to see what I’m up to… we’re up to… yeah, all of that. I hope you find what you’re looking for, and if you don’t, please please contact me. You’ll never know if I can do what you need if you don’t ask!

With that said, Enjoy!

Summer

Slide Collage

As we “slide” into the Summer of 2013, I find that my days have more in them. Namely, my children. While I have more sessions booked for engagements and family photos, I find I’m looking forward more to pictures I’ll be taking of my own children as we enjoy their time off and our increased family time together. I don’t know how many “other” projects I’ll get done (i.e. jewelry, crochet, etc.) but I know my memory cards will constantly be full.

What are you looking forward to this summer? What would you like to see here?
